This San Diego project began with a practical problem: the owners’ adult daughter was moving back from out of state with her two young children, and they needed space to both be together and maintain their independence. “We want it to be close, but we all need our own front doors,” the owner told us during our first meeting.
What we built is a modern, two-story single-family dwelling (SFD) with an attached garage that makes the most of a relatively compact urban lot.
The exterior features clean, contemporary lines with a striking two-tone palette: the deep greenish-gray siding on the ground floor transitions into crisp white plank and slat cladding on the upper floor, creating visual interest and a sense of lightness. That asymmetrical roofline isn’t just for aesthetics; it creates vaulted ceilings on the second floor, keeping the overall height within zoning restrictions. The integrated garage with its window detail adds functionality without compromising the modern design.
Technically, it was built from the ground up and required a full foundation. In our construction photos, you can see the reinforced concrete slab ready for the garage. The framing phase reveals the layout: an open-concept ground floor with a kitchen and living area, plus a separate bedroom upstairs. All the colored PEX lines visible during construction represent the complete plumbing installation, with specific connections for the kitchen, bathroom, and laundry room.
Inside, we opted for a contemporary and efficient style. The kitchen features a clever combination of upper cabinets in natural wood tones with glass fronts for a sense of spaciousness, paired with elegant black lower cabinets and a butcher block island with a waterfall edge. Black dome-shaped pendant lights add an industrial touch, while the light wood flooring creates a warm and inviting feel.
The result couldn’t be more satisfying. At Evergreen, we strive to approach every new project this way: providing solutions tailored to each budget and requirement.
